Hit & Miss: Gentlemen's Quarterly

One of the many magazines I purchase each month is GQ. I spend far too much money on magazines but I love having a pile in the house to grab when needed. These two celebrity shots from recent issues sparked a hit and a bit of a miss...

My very first post (first of many) posts about Glee was back in November 2009. The post's focus was on Harry Shum Jr. From the second he appeared on screen dancing in 'Single Ladies' I knew there was something special about him. With all the talented performers on Glee, nothing makes me smile more than Harry's dancing each week. So glad the rest of the media has finally caught on to the magic. Harry is featured in this months Rock issue of GQ.

There is really not much left to say about this story...

I have little respect for this family and truthfully the people who support them. Their main function is to take money from the celebrity addicted American public. It is reported the couple, who filed for divorce 72 days after the lavish wedding, made about $17.5 million off their big day. I am sure this story will be joked about on late night TV shows and by most comedians. But...given the financial stresses on most Americans, not to mention gay marriage still being against the laws in most States, this story is far more depressing, insulting and sad than most will ever realize...

Wild About Harry!

Now truth be told not all boy band members age as gracefully as the members of the British pop group McFly. The guys are not that old, all are still in their late twenties, but unlike some of their American counterparts, the boys of McFly get hotter with each passing year.

Formed in 2004, McFly is as well known on this side of the Atlantic for dropping trou as for their music. The guys are not only naked in their videos and photo shoots they are also known to get naked or moon whenever crowds gather. All the guys are talented and all are great looking but drummer Harry Judd. Harry and the boys have always been popular fixtures in the UK based magazine Attitude, but earlier this year Harry graced the cover alone for the very first time. I am a little late as usual with this post but last month on my birthday a friend of mine who now lives in Phoenix sent me a photo filled video with McFly's Not Alone playing in the background. Listening to the song this weekend had me Mcwanting to post about McFly.

Thumb Down: People Magazine

As a child in the 80's, Thursday was grocery day. It was my fathers payday and therefore the night of the week my family headed to the grocery store. As my siblings ran up and down each aisle my mother knew I would be fine, safe by the check outs looking at all the magazines.

In the early 80's People magazine usually had a famous celebrity, Cher, Meryl Streep, Michael Jackson on the cover. The casts of tv shows, Family Ties, Dynasty or Dallas. Rock Stars, movie themes and royalty were the usual staple except for the odd political scandal or celebrity death. There covers were sometimes almost art with stars actually posing for cover shoots and sitting down for in depth conversations with the writers from the magazine.

Things sure have changed... and so has my interest in buying the magazine. Once a weekly purchase, now I buy it once or twice a year. I might throw it in the cart if there is a cover story of interest or if someone calls and wants to bring me something when I am home sick with the flu. Seems that around the mid 90's actors and singers are on the cover began to lesson. When they are, it is rare the shot is taken just for the magazine. Replacing the talent are more stories of celebrities in trouble, on drugs, or looking to gain back the fame they had lost. Scandals dominate a large percentage of covers and of course reality stars are now a must! (btw: best of luck today Kim...)

It is funny to me that not all reality is the same with People. Shows like Survivor and Amazing Race are rarely covered (although rating winners) and Big Brother, this summer's ratings hit rarely even makes the inside. Yet... The Bachelor & The Bachelorette made 5 covers the past 11+ months (not forgetting last years Jake Pavelka who also got two covers). Princess Diana was always a regular cover girl on People but I cannot remember any other subject getting so much coverage. My research indicates the tv show Dallas, arguably the most tv show not only in the US, but around the world for close to a decade in the 80's had a total of 10 covers from 1980 through 1986. Funny that the number 10 is the exact same number of covers featuring The Bachelor and Bachelorette... Could there be some agreement between magazine and show? Not sure, but the ratings for the current installment are about on par with Big Brother and the Bacelorette has been on the cover twice and Brendon and Rachel and Jeff and Jordan are nowhere to be seen.

Let me know People when you lose the reality 'stars' and pages and pages of 'b' stars out on the town (masked as 'fashion') pictures, and get back to covering people who are talented and interesting!

Favorite Click of the Day: Russ Osterweil in TTH

This past March I profiled the work of photographer Russ Osterweil. (see that profile HERE:) I love his work and Russ says that one of the goals within his work is to create something deeper within his images as he is tired of seeing predictable and soulless images over and over.

Osterweil's work has been profiled in a 14 page feature in the current issue of Ticket to Hell Check it out HERE:

Check out more of Russ Osterweil's work on Facebook HERE:

Favorite Cover Boy of the Week: Brandon Rubendall on NEXT

Last weeks cover boy for Next Magazine is one of the hottest men currently gracing the Broadway Stage, actor Brandon Rubendall currently seen as a lead dancer in one of the most exciting and talked about production in years, 'Spider-Man Turn off the Dark' .

Brandon has been a favorite of mine since first seeing him performing in Broadway Bares Solo Strips. Brandon has such an incredible body and face, so tall and his intoxicating dance moves (watch a bit below) and personality will make you a fan.

Below: Brandon attending 'Spider-Man Turn off the Dark' Opening Night After Party.

Brandon makes his Broadway debut in Spider-Man but has performed in local and national productions of Hairspray, West Side Story, Altar Boyz, 42nd Street, Crazy For You and the Radio City Xmas Spectacular. Brandon can also be seen in various commercials including one for C&A (Brazil) featuring Beyoncé and in The Big Gay Musical.

Unless you live under a rock you know the past year has been one filled with turbulence for all those involved in the Spider-Man production. Stops and starts, rewrites, firings, injuries (including a foot inury for Brandon). Through all of this the cast has grown stronger and Brandon has been a positive force, supporting his show and his cast since he began rehearsals a little over a year ago. This week 'Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark' finally officially opened and although the reviews were not all great, most noted the improvements in story and production and agree it is an exciting night of theatre.

Above & Below: Brandon By Dirty Sugar.

Originally from Reading Pennsylvania, Brandon has lived in New York for close to three years. Although Brandon acts, dances and sings his first passion is dance.

If your in New York you can check out Brandon and the cast in Spider-Man Turn off the Dark at the Foxwoods Theatre. Buy tickets and find out more about the show HERE: You can also learn more about Brandon at his official site HERE:

Against The Odds: Instinct's new cover guy Phillip Smith

It was back in March I first saw shots of model Phillip Smith. The shots, by Thunder Grey Photo showed not just a great body and a beautiful face, the shots showed an intensity, a determination in Phillip's eyes that warranted further attention.

The determination has certainly paid off. Phillip is Instinct Magazines May Cover model (shot by Mark Oberlin) with a caption reading 'Star in the Making'. Phillip's rise to fame has not come easy and the profile documents the challenges Phillip faced on his journey from his childhood in Ohio to living and working in Los Angeles.

    Below: Phillip by Allen Zaki

'I love anime," explains Phillip. "I have a tattoo from an anime series that symbolizes my life. The series is called Naruto, and there is a character that goes through hell. [The character] has a curse mark on his shoulder. Because my life has been full of personal hells, I got [the symbol] as a tattoo'
    PS

Read more of Phillip's journey at Instinct HERE: and pick up your own copy of the magazine!
