Halloween Countdown: Roseanne: Tricks & Treats

About 11pm last night, (don't ask me why) I decided that the ceiling in the living room that I started to paint last February needed to be finished. I had already had quite a long day, and I don't know about you but sometimes I get an idea in my head and can't get it out. I know myself well enough to know that if I did not start painting I would not have let the idea go. As luck would have it my step ladder was at my brothers so it was a acrobatic dance on milk crates to finish the job.

Now, when I begin any job the first task to find the perfect DVD to put in. I want something that will make the time fly while at the same time something I don't have to pay too too much attention to. My copy of Roseanne, Tricks & Treats was sitting on my kitchen table, still in the plastic it arrived from Amazon with. Roseanne is one of those shows I sometimes think was brilliant and other times think was garbage. The truth is it was both. Although Roseanne herself could never admit it, the show had about 3 really great seasons, 2 pretty good seasons and 4 pretty bad ones. Most (again, except Roseanne herself) agree the cutting edge lower middle class family drama lost most of it's street cred with it's horrid final season. Spin all you like Roseanne, that final season SUCKED!

I separate Roseanne's good or bad years basically down to whether Lecy Goranson was playing Becky. Lecy's Becky hit the right note of annoyance and self absorption most teenage girls exhibit. Sarah Chalke's Becky was never really written for, she was just arm candy and an excuse to legitimize keeping Johnny Galecki and Glenn Quinn on the show. Shortly after Lecy left, Sara Gilbert too reduced her work load for school and the show needed a sister at home so the Healy brothers could continue to live with the Connors without it being just weird.

Now the quality of the show is certainly not connected directly to who was playing Becky (frighteningly it seems more connected to Tom Arnold's presence) but as the show went on and Roseanne got more control the show got worse and worse. With actors like John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf and Estelle Parsons, it was still capable of delivering laughs, but everything that made the show click in season 2-5 were abandoned in the latter seasons.

Tricks & Treats follows my theory pretty much by the book. (the exception being the Skeleton in the Closet Halloween episode about whether Fred is gay is pretty hilarious) As the DVD progressed (and my painting arm got more tired) the quality of the episodes declined at a rapid pace. Sadly I was still rolling away on the ceiling at around 1:30a.m when the final episode, one with commentary by Roseanne, began to play. I like a delusional celebrity like the best of them but Roseanne really takes the cake. She takes credit for everything good and places blame for anything bad. According to Barr, there really were no Halloween themed episodes prior to her fighting with the network to get hers made. Although Roseanne cannot be bothered to remember (or research) the names of most of her more talented co-stars she does remember to pretty much take credit for George Clooney becoming famous...

My recommendation for Roseanne Tricks & Treats is to skip buying the DVD. Look for the good ones in repeats, most of them play every year around this time. Just a warning, if you find yourself with the Halloween/Scrooge combo themed offering, TURN THE CHANNEL!

Favorite Scene Of The Day: Blair Underwood in Sex And The City

I have loved Blair Underwood since I was kid and breezed onto LA Law giving the downtrodden Abby a reason to smile. No matter how many parts Blair has played he seems stuck with the reputation of a good guy, seems to happen with almost any actor who plays The President.

Back in August when I wasn't posting on a daily basis I missed the actors Birthday. I had meant to use these caps and stuck them away until I discovered the folder last night. I was not a regular watcher of Sex And The City, still have not seen it all but I do love actor David Eigenberg (Steve) and tried to catch as many of his scenes and storyline with Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) as I could. In the shows last two seasons, Blair showed up as Dr. Roberts Lees to provide a brief, but memorable wrench in the love life of Miranda and Steve. This scene, with Steve coming home to find them together includes one of my favorite scenes from the show (Steve being helped by the man he just found in bed with Miranda) as well as one of Blair's few nude scenes.

THE X FACTOR

Ok, The X Factor is over the top, desperate to pull at your heart strings, far too heavily and manipulatively edited. Deliberately confusing and obviously dishonest (those cannot possibly be the actual homes of all of the judges). Simon is as full of himself as always, Paula as wingy and Nicole Scherzinger more than annoying (if she questions how she will market someone one more time...) But...damn it if all of those things don't pile together to make the show freakin addictive!

I disagreed with many of the choices last night. For starters I would have kept Brennin Hunt. Yeah Yeah he is hot (in a Brandon Beemer sort of way) but although I see the talent in the two rappers chosen, I think they will become boring pretty quickly. I also liked most of the groups Paula sent home. I just hope the heavily produced pre-recorded tracks become a thing of the past when the singers hit the stage.

Got to love a show that makes American Idol look subtle...

If you have not seen the video below, do yourself and favor and watch. Yes, again manipulative, music cues and all but if it does not hit you emotionally you got to have ice running through your veins.

Just Because: Jonathan Taylor Thomas

I was never a huge fan of ABC's Home Improvement. I was still in school during its run in the 90's and wasn't watching that much television. I did however watch enough to develop a crush on Jonathan Taylor Thomas. Thomas stood out from the other boys in the cast. Taran Noah Smith and Zachery Ty Bryan were both cute and talented but there was a quality about Thomas that was distinct and special.

As I have gotten older, when I see an old episode on television, it is now the talent of Patricia Richardson I enjoy. Richardson really made the most of her role and although I don't dislike Tim Allen, I don't find anything especially watchable about him either, it is Richardson who holds my interest.

How great does Thomas (and the whole cast really) look in the new shots from Entertainment Weekly's new Reunion issue. Thomas, who just turned 30 had not been together with his co-stars since the show went off the air. Thomas is sporting the hairstyle I sported through most of my early 20's and just as when on the show, stands out in the group and the photos (especially the last one). What a great transition, time to get back to acting Jonathan!

Some of my Favorite TV Supporters:

Since television began, women in supporting roles have stolen the show. Think Karen Walker, Marie Barone, Sue Ellen Ewing, Dr. Lilith Sternin & Jen Lindley, Florence Johnston, can't imagine their respective shows without them. Today, characters like Kalinda Sharma on The Good Wife is one of televisions most interesting women to watch.

The queen of all supporting ladies, Valerie Harper (Rhoda Morgenstern on MTV) showed the power of her role more than any other. I am not a huge fan of Mary Tyler Moore (except in Ordinary People)but recently began watching old episodes of her classic show. When Rhonda left the show, so did the spark. Although the show continued on for several more years (and yes a few outstanding episodes) the quality may have remained but the magic sure did not.

The key to a great supporting character is magic, qualities you could not have in your lead. The ability to walk in for a few short moments and leave their mark. Here are three of my favorite current magic makers.

    Jessica Capshaw
    Arizona Robbins, Grey's Anatomy

The character of Arizona is a breath of fresh air every time she shows up on screen. Finally a character worthy of the talent of the incredible Sara Ramirez. I am not really a Mark fan so which these characters would find a storyline not so linked to him, but I enjoy any storyline Arizona is involved. (especially love her interactions with Alex)

    Katy Mixon
    Victoria Flynn, Mike & Molly

Wind drinking, weed smoking, man huntin bombshell. A character like no other. Would not want to run into her (especially if she is driving) in real life, but on television, priceless.

    Melissa Rauch
Bernadette Rostenkowski, The Big Bang Theory

Too good for Howard yes, but also too good a character to lose. Bernadette provides the perfect addition to a trio of Penny and Amy Farrah Fowler. The show is getting top heavy with great characters and Bernadette might be the most likely to be first let go but instead, I suggest the creators spin the three females off. Their ladies nights are like no other.

Premiere Week

I was away from Tuesday to Friday and missed out on watching pretty much anything on television's biggest week. But... thanks to a rainy Saturday and my DVR I made up for it and caught up with most of what I recorded.

    Tuesday:
    Glee

Tuesday's season premiere was promising, the writing was crisp (best line of the week; I can't work with Her!) and the hour more character driven as the writers promised. Except for Darren Criss (whose red pants and Tom Jones moves almost had me forget Chord for a moment) the musical numbers were rather lack luster. I HATE Kurt and Rachel duets but for some reason the show seems determined to make these two besties. Ryan Murphy promised Mike, Artie, Tina and Mercedes would be given more attention this season and although I think this is going to happen, it was not evident in the episode.

    Wednesday:
    Modern Family
    The X Factor

I did record, but have yet to watch this weeks Modern Family. The show is on a high after it's well deserved sweep at last Sunday's EMMY'S. All of the attention seems to have gone to co-creator Steve Levitan's head as he took to twitter on Thursday to celebrate the shows rating win over The X Factor by saying; "It's extremely gratifying that a scripted comedy finally beat an over-hyped karaoke contest."

Although I understand his feelings, I think he might regret this at some point. Although the premiere episodes of The X Factor were nothing spectacular it would be a mistake to count the show out just yet. Idol continues to dominate the ratings and although there are far to many singing comps on tv I have a feeling The X Factor's slow start does not mean it won't be dominating the ratings once the audition phase is over. Besides the attributes of host Steve Jones, the formula has dragged in millions everywhere else it has aired. Like pretty much everyone else who has written about the show I agree it's desperation to have that 'Susan Boyle' moment is far to obvious and so clearly manipulative. Also, get Cheryl Cole back! If I do turn off this show it will most likely be because Nicole Scherzinger is about as appealing as moldy cheese.

    Thursday:
    Grey's Anatomy

When the season finale of Grey's Anatomy aired last spring I was pretty much worn out from what was my favorite television drama. The cast became so huge (do we really need any of those new interns...) that the core characters I loved (Meredith, Christina and Alex) seemed lost in the sea of new faces. The show seemed stale and the writing repetitive and tired. I DVR'd the season premiere, thinking I would watch the two hours in about twenty minutes, but surprise surprise the show hooked me back in. The show promises to focus on the core characters this season which I hope they do. I would still quickly give Teddy, Mark, Jackson and April the boot. Whatever purpose they once served is over.

    Friday:
    A Gifted Man

I love almost anything Patrick Wilson does (Little Children being my favorite PW film) but had very little hope for A Gifted Man. In reading about the show the theme seemed tired and the Friday night time slot seemed to indicate doom. But... the cast is so winning (including a standout performance by recent Emmy winner Margo Martindale)and the execution so flawless A Gifted Man ended up being my favorite hour of television of the week.

A Little Lynch...

Above: The hostess with the mostess Jane Lynch

Let me start by saying like most of you I LOVE LOVE LOVE Jane Lynch. I loved her long before Glee hit the airwaves. Although not a star, Lynch has been working steadily on television and movies for years. There is a reason however that up until Glee Lynch has been the go to girl to come into a scene, hit it out of the park then quickly disappear. A little Lynch goes a long way. Even as Sue Sylvester the producers chose thankfully have the odd 'Sueless' episode. Lynch, and Sue have the type of comedy that hits hard, fast and funny. But...overtime can become tiring. When it was first announced (seems like years ago) that Lynch was hosting this year I was excited. But...by the time September 18th came around, Lynch had hit almost every talk show, entertainment show hawking her autobiography (which I suspect for many reasons she will regret in the future), not to mention her endless stream of television commercials for every product under the sun. Over exposure is but one more 'Two And A Half Men' guest appearances away....

    Above: Martha Plimpton

Lynch was good last night, a few of her one liners were brilliant, but over all she suffered from horrid writing. Some of the presenters looked pained to have to read from the teleprompter. (didn't Julianna Margulies suffer enough in her dress without having to read those lines...) I have been surprised to read the show got generally positive reviews. I felt it was one of the worst EMMY's in years. I thought Jimmy Fallon blew it out of the park last year (cannot even compare his opening musical number, which Lynch was apart of, to this years).

Speaking of writing, why did the best comedy, Modern Family come off so badly... Julie Bowen and Ty Burrell deserve their nods for sure, but Bowen (whose dress looked like something even Snookie might pass on) and Burrell had speeches that totally took away from their win. Burrell's in particular, with the recurring theme of his father's disapproval to his wearing make-up for work, was forced and not remotely funny. Even the writers of the best comedy showed they are better at writing for their characters then themselves.

    Above: Peter Dinklage

What did I like then, well there were a few moments throughout the three hours where realness shown through. My comments above about the writing prove that what really makes an award show are real emotion, not scripted tugs at it. Melissa McCarthy won everyone over, more for her real reaction more than whether she deserved the award. I did wonder how Lauren Graham might be reacting... McCarthy's Gilmore Girls co-star was robbed year after year for her work.

Amy Poehler should have gotten paid for coming up with the best written moment of the night. Her idea was so great because it took a few seconds to even realize it was so well planned out. I also LOVED seeing Martha Plimpton. I have not seen her sit-com but am a huge fan of her film work and whenever I see her cannot get The Goonies theme song out of my head.

My predictions were about 50/50 and loved Kyle Chandlers win.

EMMY'S Supporting Actor Drama and Lead Actor

    LEAD ACTOR: MINI-SERIES/MOVIE

In all fairness I have not seen even one of the performance in this category but...for hotness alone, Ramirez and Elba for the win!

    Idris Elba: Luther

    Laurence Fishburne: Thurgood

William Hurt: Too Big To Fail

    Greg Kinnear: The Kennedys

    Barry Pepper: The Kennedys

    Edgar Ramirez: Carlos

    BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: DRAMA

Maybe it is because The Good Wife is the only show from this group I actually watch but Alan Cumming is incredible as Eli Gold.

Andre Braugher: Men of a Certain Age

    Josh Charles: The Good Wife

    Alan Cumming: The Good Wife

    Peter Dinklage: Game of Thrones

    Walton Goggins: Justified

    John Slattery: Mad Men
